Jarvis Island, from bridge of Polk County
21 of 56
from  1961-1962, 110X, USS Polk County (LST-1084)  album
Only structure on island is abandoned guano barn. Jarvis was on the equator and at one time was a guano mining operation. Also, in the pre-war years, several Hawaiians were placed on the island to establish possession to keep the Japanese from claiming it. Our visit to Jarvis was to ensure it was uninhabited prior to the nuclear tests in the area. Dark shape visible at the right end of the island is a sunken Japanese merchant ship.
