from  1990-1993, YN-0000, USS Gallant (MSO-489)  album
Through great tumultuous endeavor of lack of sleep and rest, I was able to greatly help the ship attain number one ranking during triannual inspection while enduring two period of no personnelman: 1st absent for 6 months and 2nd absent for 8 1/2 months, which was my task to do his work plus stand port and starboard watches underway with usuallly averaging between 65% to 50% manning at various times onboard. Three section duty inport. PN1 Lyson departs September 1991 with his relief - PN1(AW) Woods - reporting in March 1992. PN1(AW) Woods depart July 1992 with his relief - PN1 Starr - reportin in March 1993. The Triannual Inspection was in June 1993. Yo Solo was instrumental in getting number one in the inspection. However, LCDR Joseph O'Connell was the best XO on the GALLANT that supported me in this endeavor; further, LCDR E. B. Standrich, who once bragged in the wardroom that he would break me, was instrumental in toughening me to the rigors of sea life by having me do 90 straight days of mess duty of continuous work with usually 10 minutes to eat due to the cooks' late preparations and by only providing me about 4-5 hours sleep a day.
