Vern Smith dropped out of high school and joined the Navy as a Seaman Recruit. He rose through the enlisted ranks to Petty Officer First Class, then Ensign to Rear Admiral during a career which progressed over a period of more than forty years.
In addition to degrees in Business Administration, Engineering and Military Sciences, he graduated from Liberty University Bible College at the age of 77 with a graduate degree in theology.
