From - Julie Westgate Grant I know he was adopted...in ancestry in Chanute, KS there were two Cowell Brothers one was married and one was not...we believe his mother may have been a single head of household. In the town. I honestly think she had a child from either brother and earl may have adopted it to give it a name....but because his name at birth was Charles Foss schall and not Cowell but was given that name at his adoption seems very suspect.....silly little story that obviously dies with my gmpa...very sad cuz I would have really loved to know the story.
