Reflections on PO3 Brescher's
US Navy Service
TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE, WHAT INFLUENCED HIS/HER DECISION TO JOIN THE NAVY?
My father said orginally he tried to sign up for the Army, but was rejected for high blood pressure. He went to a doctor for high blood pressure medication and took it for a month, went to the Navy, passed the physical exam and became a sailor.
TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH HE/SHE TOOK IN HIS/HER MILITARY SERVICE. WHERE DID THEY GO TO BOOT CAMP AND WHAT UNITS, BASES, SHIPS OR SQUADRONS WERE THEY ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS HIS/HER REASON FOR LEAVING?
After washing out of submarine training in Groton (middle ear problem) attended Torpedoman and depth charge training.
IF HE/SHE PARTICIPATED IN ANY MILITARY OPERATIONS, INCLUDING COMBAT, HUMANITARIAN AND PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS, TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE, PLEASE DESCRIBE THOSE YOU FEEL WERE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT TO HIM/HER AND, IF LIFE-CHANGING, IN WHAT WAY.
The USS Bogue (aircraft carrier) and USS Lea 22April1942 to 30May1942 attacked German U-Boat wolfpacks. Turning them back six times earning the USS Lea The Presidential Unit Citation.
OF ALL THEIR DUTY STATIONS OR ASSIGNMENTS, ARE YOU AWARE OF ANY HE/SHE HAD FONDEST MEMORIES OF AND WHY? WHICH WAS THEIR LEAST FAVORITE?
USS Lea DD118, Wickes Class Destroyer, Capt Donald I Thomas November 1942-March 1944.
FROM THEIR ENTIRE MILITARY SERVICE, DESCRIBE ANY PERSONAL MEMORIES, YOU MAY BE AWARE OF, WHICH IMPACTED HIM/HER THE MOST.
Five days out of New York on 31December1943 the USS Lea was rammed by a merchantship. It was towed to Bermuda later on to Boston.
WHAT PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS DO YOU BELIEVE HE/SHE WAS MOST PROUD OF FROM HIS/HER MILITARY SERVICE?
USS Lea awarded the Presidenial Unit Award for fighting off Nazi wolfpacks in the North Atlantic
IF HE/SHE SURVIVED MILITARY SERVICE, WHAT PROFESSION(S) DID HE/SHE FOLLOW AFTER DISCHARGE?
My father went on to become a Tool and Die maker and machinist. Got married to Veronica Tecza, had 2 sons, a daughter and 3 grandchildren. He died from a stroke at age 75.
IF KNOWN, WHAT MILITARY ASSOCIATIONS WAS HE OR SHE A MEMBER OF, IF ANY? ARE YOU AWARE OF ANY SPECIFIC BENEFITS THEY DERIVED FROM THEIR MEMBERSHIPS?
Listed on the the National World War II memorial. www.wwiimemorial.com
IF HE/SHE SURVIVED MILITARY SERVICE, IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU BELIEVE HIS/HER SERVING IN THE MILITARY INFLUENCED THE WAY THEY APPROACHED THEIR PERSONAL LIFE, FAMILY LIFE AND CAREER?
John F. Kennedy Quotes War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige that the warrior does today.
IF THEY WERE HERE TODAY, WHAT ADVICE DO YOU THINK HE OR SHE WOULD GIVE TO THOSE WHO FOLLOWED IN THEIR FOOTSTEPS AND RECENTLY ENTERED MILITARY SERVICE?
We set sail on this new sea because there is knowledge to be gained. John F Kennedy
