Reflections on CDR Ackerman's US Navy Service

 Reflections On My Service

PLEASE DESCRIBE WHO OR WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO JOIN THE NAVY.
I wanted to get out of the small town I was in.
WHETHER YOU WERE IN THE SERVICE FOR SEVERAL YEARS OR AS A CAREER, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH YOU TOOK. WHERE DID YOU GO TO BOOT CAMP AND WHAT UNITS, BASES, SHIPS OR SQUADRONS WERE YOU ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS YOUR REASON FOR LEAVING?
Into delayed entry as Machinist Mate Nuke. Disqualified for shooting a deer out of season. Went into Boot Camp as an undesignated SR. Got boot camp Honor Man, meritoriously advanced to SA and got STG "A" School. Signed up for AEF in "A" School, got 3rd class out of there. Continued to STG1(SW). Did BS while teaching "C" School. Went into reserves, cross rated to BM1 as no STG's in Reserves. Got commissioned, went to Bethesda, MD and ended up doing research. Got out in 2005, went to Medical School on HPSP Scholarship. Entered back onto active duty 2010 as LT and went to work with the Marines. Attended Family Medicine Residency at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton and Graduated as Board Certified Family Physician in Jan2016.
IF YOU PARTICIPATED IN ANY MILITARY OPERATIONS, INCLUDING COMBAT, HUMANITARIAN AND PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS, PLEASE DESCRIBE THOSE WHICH MADE A LASTING IMPACT ON YOU AND, IF LIFE-CHANGING, IN WHAT WAY?
Desert Storm/Desert Shield doing interdiction. That's it.
OF ALL YOUR DUTY STATIONS OR ASSIGNMENTS, WHICH ONE DO YOU HAVE FONDEST MEMORIES OF AND WHY? WHICH WAS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
Each was unique. I liked the USS Hepburn (FF 1055), USS Oldendorf (DD 972), MWSG 17 and MWSS 172 the most.
FROM YOUR ENTIRE MILITARY SERVICE, DESCRIBE ANY MEMORIES YOU STILL REFLECT BACK ON TO THIS DAY.
Walking out onto the weather decks from Sonar Control while underway for the first time while on the USS Hepburn and seeing nothing but ocean. Amazing!
OF ALL THE MEDALS, AWARDS, FORMAL PRESENTATIONS AND QUALIFICATION BADGES YOU RECEIVED, OR OTHER MEMORABILIA, WHICH ONE IS THE MOST MEANINGFUL TO YOU AND WHY?
ESWS and FMF because they were a distinct quality I had to work on and wear.
WHICH INDIVIDUAL(S) FROM YOUR TIME IN THE MILITARY STAND OUT AS HAVING THE MOST POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOU AND WHY?
My Sea Daddies from the USS Hepburn.
IN WHAT WAYS HAS SERVING IN THE MILITARY INFLUENCED THE WAY YOU HAVE APPROACHED YOUR LIFE AND YOUR CAREER? WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT YOUR TIME IN THE SERVICE?
I have stuck with my goals and tried not to care too much about what the current person in charge says unless it's helpful.
BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO HAVE RECENTLY JOINED THE NAVY?
Set goals, try to enjoy yourself.
IN WHAT WAYS HAS TOGETHERWESERVED.COM HELPED YOU REMEMBER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND THE FRIENDS YOU SERVED WITH.
Lets me regroup myself by looking at where I came from.
