Reflections on CPO Buskirk's
US Navy Service
PLEASE DESCRIBE WHO OR WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO JOIN THE NAVY.
Conditions and relationships at home were not what I felt comfortable with. The available jobs locally were for unskilled and low paid labor.

WHETHER YOU WERE IN THE SERVICE FOR SEVERAL YEARS OR AS A CAREER, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH YOU TOOK. WHERE DID YOU GO TO BOOT CAMP AND WHAT UNITS, BASES, SHIPS OR SQUADRONS WERE YOU ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS YOUR REASON FOR LEAVING?
Entered the Navy on May 31st 1963 going to boot camp in San Diego. Upon completion of basic training, I was assigned to ET A school in Great Lakes. Having difficulty with an instructor and physical altercation, the instructor was dismissed and our class repeated the same week. The instructor for the next week was the room mate of the previous instructor and my evaluation was terrible and although I passed the week with an 86% I was dropped from the course. Reassigned to IC A school I completed that course of instruction and was assigned to the USS Midway CVA-41 in San Francisco, CA. Serving in Midway from Aug. 64 to Mar. 66 transferring to the USS Pollux AKS-4 in Yokosuka, Japan. Being the only IC man onboard, the work load was massive and I received much assistance in the evening from my Engineering Officer who had electrical background. One evening as we were working on alarm systems in the storage spaces he asked if I was married and if my wife had accompanied me. Telling him no and that my rank and time in service didn't rate transportation of my family on this tour, he asked if I wanted to transfer back stateside. He explained that if I wasn't allowed to have my family with me that I was not required to complete an unaccompanied tour like this. So eventually was transferred to the USS Vega AF-59 out of Oakland, CA. After getting my wife settled in an apartment, I reported onboard the Vega and deployed on a WestPac two days later. We tied up across the pier from the Pollux. Left the Navy in May 1967. Enlisted back in the Navy in Feb. 1972 and reported to Philadelphia, PA for refitting and reclassification. Transferred to the USS Corry DD-817 in Mar. 1972 to Oct 1973. Reported to NavSta Great Lakes for IC B school in Oct 1973. Re-enlisted during this time and transferred to USS Sierra AD-18 in Sept. 1974.
