Reflections on SN Allred's US Navy Service

 Reflections On My Service

PLEASE DESCRIBE WHO OR WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO JOIN THE NAVY.
Thomas Allred, BMSN - Please describe who or what influenced your decision to join the Navy.
3 Generations of Navy
Aside from being the third generation of Sailors in my family, it sounded like a fun and challenging way for me to make something of myself.
WHETHER YOU WERE IN THE SERVICE FOR SEVERAL YEARS OR AS A CAREER, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH YOU TOOK. WHERE DID YOU GO TO BOOT CAMP AND WHAT UNITS, BASES, SHIPS OR SQUADRONS WERE YOU ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS YOUR REASON FOR LEAVING?
Thomas Allred, BMSN - Whether you were in the service for several years or as a career, please describe the direction or path you took. Where did you go to boot camp and what units, bases, ships or squadrons were you assigned to? What was your reason for leaving?
I originally wanted to be a Hospital Corpsman but became fascinated with the rate of Boatswain's Mate.
IF YOU PARTICIPATED IN ANY MILITARY OPERATIONS, INCLUDING COMBAT, HUMANITARIAN AND PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS, PLEASE DESCRIBE THOSE WHICH MADE A LASTING IMPACT ON YOU AND, IF LIFE-CHANGING, IN WHAT WAY?
Thomas Allred, BMSN - If you participated in any military operations, including combat, humanitarian and peacekeeping operations, please describe those which made a lasting impact on you and, if life-changing, in what way?
The first ship I was on was assigned as a flag ship for operations in the middle east, but I was never involved in any combat operations.
OF ALL YOUR DUTY STATIONS OR ASSIGNMENTS, WHICH ONE DO YOU HAVE FONDEST MEMORIES OF AND WHY? WHICH WAS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
Thomas Allred, BMSN - Of all your duty stations or assignments, which one do you have fondest memories of and why? Which was your least favorite?
USS Lasalle AGF3. I made the most friends on that ship, was on it the longest out of all of my assignments and I knew every inch of that ship.
FROM YOUR ENTIRE MILITARY SERVICE, DESCRIBE ANY MEMORIES YOU STILL REFLECT BACK ON TO THIS DAY.
Thomas Allred, BMSN - From your entire military service, describe any memories you still reflect back on to this day.
Probably the shipyards in Norfolk, VA. The Lasalle spent some time there and we were put in the barracks on the base where I met most of the friends I made during my assignment to the Lasalle.
WHAT PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF FROM YOUR MILITARY CAREER?
Thomas Allred, BMSN - What professional achievements are you most proud of from your military career?
I attended boat coxswain school in Little Creek, Va.
OF ALL THE MEDALS, AWARDS, FORMAL PRESENTATIONS AND QUALIFICATION BADGES YOU RECEIVED, OR OTHER MEMORABILIA, WHICH ONE IS THE MOST MEANINGFUL TO YOU AND WHY?
Thomas Allred, BMSN - Of all the medals, awards, formal presentations and qualification badges you received, or other memorabilia, which one is the most meaningful to you and why?
I qualified for pistol marksman and defense service, although I only received the defense service ribbon for some reason.
WHICH INDIVIDUAL(S) FROM YOUR TIME IN THE MILITARY STAND OUT AS HAVING THE MOST POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOU AND WHY?
Thomas Allred, BMSN - Which individual(s) from your time in the military stand out as having the most positive impact on you and why?
Probably Captain Jack J. Samar of the USS Lasalle. He was always in a good mood, treated the enlisted men like they were equals, always kept cool under pressure; he took everything step by step rather than taking it all in and getting stressed out.
CAN YOU RECOUNT A PARTICULAR INCIDENT FROM YOUR SERVICE, WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN FUNNY AT THE TIME, BUT STILL MAKES YOU LAUGH?
Thomas Allred, BMSN - Can you recount a particular incident from your service, which may or may not have been funny at the time, but still makes you laugh?
Boot camp, when the company commander would bark at us, my friend Thomas Shields would wait until he walked away and mumble, "That's bull**** sir."
WHAT PROFESSION DID YOU FOLLOW AFTER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW? IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY SERVING, WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY?
Thomas Allred, BMSN - What profession did you follow after your military service and what are you doing now? If you are currently serving, what is your present occupational specialty?
I have held several positions since the Navy including deckhand on the Mississippi river. I am currently in the operations department of a logistics company.
WHAT MILITARY ASSOCIATIONS ARE YOU A MEMBER OF, IF ANY? WHAT SPECIFIC BENEFITS DO YOU DERIVE FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIPS?
Thomas Allred, BMSN - What military associations are you a member of, if any? What specific benefits do you derive from your memberships?
I am a member of USS Lasalle Association. No benefits aside from sharing memories and stories with friends.
IN WHAT WAYS HAS SERVING IN THE MILITARY INFLUENCED THE WAY YOU HAVE APPROACHED YOUR LIFE AND YOUR CAREER? WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT YOUR TIME IN THE SERVICE?
Thomas Allred, BMSN - In what ways has serving in the military influenced the way you have approached your life and your career? What do you miss most about your time in the service?
It taught me perseverance, how to look at the bigger picture down the road and integrity.
BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO HAVE RECENTLY JOINED THE NAVY?
Thomas Allred, BMSN - Based on your own experiences, what advice would you give to those who have recently joined the Navy?
Keep your head on a swivel. Opportunities are all around if you pay attention.

Thomas Allred, BMSN - In what ways has TogetherWeServed.com helped you remember your military service and the friends you served with.
Finding and staying connected with former shipmates and keeping current on military news.
