Reflections on SCPO Addison.'s US Navy Service

 Reflections On My Service

TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE, WHAT INFLUENCED HIS/HER DECISION TO JOIN THE NAVY?
As a boy growing up in Dallas, Texas, I used to watch "Combat" and "Victory at Sea" on our little black and white with a large magnifying glass attached to the screen. These programs were actual video of action during WWII. I decided then and there that when I was old enough, I would go in the Navy. I don't really know why, as I had never seen the ocean while I was growing up. I just like what I saw in the movies and I like the "crackerjack" uniforms. I set goals of going in the Navy for 20 years and making "CHIEF."
TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH HE/SHE TOOK IN HIS/HER MILITARY SERVICE. WHERE DID THEY GO TO BOOT CAMP AND WHAT UNITS, BASES, SHIPS OR SQUADRONS WERE THEY ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS HIS/HER REASON FOR LEAVING?
I was assigned to CTR class A school in Pensacola, FL out of boot camp in San Diego. I had nothing to do with this decision. I was actually very surprised with this because, all CT's were required to have at least a high school or GED. I had neither. Because of several things that happened during my childhood involving my family, and the fact that my mother had changed my name when I was about 10 years old, it took about a year to get my interim security clearance so that I could go to advanced school and graduate to begin my career. It took another two years after graduation to in Sidi Yahia, Morocco, North Africa, before I would get my final clearance so that I could continue my advancement in my career path.
IF HE/SHE PARTICIPATED IN ANY MILITARY OPERATIONS, INCLUDING COMBAT, HUMANITARIAN AND PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS, TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE, PLEASE DESCRIBE THOSE YOU FEEL WERE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT TO HIM/HER AND, IF LIFE-CHANGING, IN WHAT WAY.
My combat operations were limited to carrier duty aboard the USS Ranger and special duty aboard the diesel submarine USS Wahoo in the Gulf of Tonkin and Sea of Japan during the Vietnam conflict.
FROM THEIR ENTIRE MILITARY SERVICE, DESCRIBE ANY PERSONAL MEMORIES, YOU MAY BE AWARE OF, WHICH IMPACTED HIM/HER THE MOST.
My submarine qualifications aboard the USS Glenard P Lipscomb (SSN 685) during a MED run in 1979. Also, the day that I was initiated into the ranks of Chief Petty Officer. The latter was probably the proudest day of my life.
OF ALL THE MEDALS, AWARDS, FORMAL PRESENTATIONS AND QUALIFICATION BADGES HE/SHE RECEIVED, WHICH WERE THE MOST MEANINGFUL TO HIM/HER AND WHY?
My dolphins and my Navy Achievement Medal(NAM). The NAM was earned for duties performed aboard the USS Glenard P Lipscomb (SSN 685). This is also when I earned my dolphins. A very proud deployment for me.
IF KNOWN, PLEASE LIST ANY INDIVIDUAL(S) FROM HIS/HER TIME IN THE MILITARY WHO STOOD OUT AS HAVING THE MOST POSITIVE IMPACT ON THEM AND WHY?
PO1 Brennan, an instructor at NCTC Corry Station, Pensacola, Florida, probably made the biggest impact on me during my time in Class A school. I was a rock. He took me under his wing and said that he was not going to give up on my, that he would make me one of the best in the fleet. I believe that he was successful. However, it was not an easy task for him. I could not type, could not learn Morse code, etc. But by the time he got through with me, I learned both and a lot more. I ultimately learned to type at better than 120 wpm, and copied Morse code at better than 60 gpm.
ARE YOU AWARE OF ANY PARTICULAR INCIDENT FROM HIS/HER SERVICE, WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN FUNNY AT THE TIME, BUT STILL MADE THEM LAUGH LATER ON?
Nothing in particular.
IF HE/SHE SURVIVED MILITARY SERVICE, WHAT PROFESSION(S) DID HE/SHE FOLLOW AFTER DISCHARGE?
After I retired in Washington, D.C., I began managing a bowling center in Arlington, VA. I had always worked in bowling centers as a child and teenager. I even worked part-time in bowling centers wherever I was stationed. I was well qualified in all areas as a mechanic, lane maintenance, food operations and league organization. It was a natural for me. Later, I transferred to Long Island, New York, and managed Garden City Bowl which was a part of the professional bowling tour. In New York, I received my real estate license and began selling real estate in Levittown and Hicksville, New York. I ultimately ended up back in the Dallas, TX area and started working as a purchasing agent for government contractors. I retired from that in March of 2001. That is where we are today, "RETIRED" and loving it.
IF KNOWN, WHAT MILITARY ASSOCIATIONS WAS HE OR SHE A MEMBER OF, IF ANY? ARE YOU AWARE OF ANY SPECIFIC BENEFITS THEY DERIVED FROM THEIR MEMBERSHIPS?
I am a member of the American Legion(AL), Veterans of Foreign Wars(VFW), Fleet Reserve Association(FRA), and the USAA. The primary benefit from the first three is a voice within my state and federal legislatures in protecting and strengthening our benefits and entitlements. The USAA provides me with auto and home insurance at the best possible rates, as well as many other financial benefits at greatly reduced rates or even free.
IF HE/SHE SURVIVED MILITARY SERVICE, IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU BELIEVE HIS/HER SERVING IN THE MILITARY INFLUENCED THE WAY THEY APPROACHED THEIR PERSONAL LIFE, FAMILY LIFE AND CAREER?
The military instilled a sense of pride and self worth in me that carried over into my life after retirement and still guides me today, 26 years later. A sense of honesty and integrity that I probably would not have had it not been for my military career.
IF THEY WERE HERE TODAY, WHAT ADVICE DO YOU THINK HE OR SHE WOULD GIVE TO THOSE WHO FOLLOWED IN THEIR FOOTSTEPS AND RECENTLY ENTERED MILITARY SERVICE?
Stay true to yourself and your service and always strive to be and do the best that you possibly can. You do not have to be the best, just do the best that you can. In following that, you will be the best!
HOW EFFECTIVE HAS TOGETHERWESERVED.COM BEEN IN HELPING YOU RECORD YOUR REMEMBERED PERSONS MILITARY SERVICE? DO YOU HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL COMMENTS OR SUGGESTIONS YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE?
It has helped me to locate shipmates that I had lost contact with and to rekindle old friendships. It has also helped me to obtain histories of some of my previous commands that have long since been decommisioned.
