I was with Seaman Davis as a member of Buchanan's Aft Damage Control Party on Monday, April 17, 1972, when an artillery round, fired from a North Vietnamese shore battery, exploded after striking the deck above us. While there were multiple casualties, we knew Leonard's injuries were life threatening. Despite our best efforts, he died almost immediately. He was, however, with his shipmates at the end and I remember him to this day.
Besides having the same General Quarter's Battle Station assignment, Leonard and I were members of First Division and stood many a watch on the bridge together, speaking of our mutual goal of one day becoming architects. He was a good man; a young man who never had the opportunity to grow old. He is well remembered by me, his former shipmate.
