Scamp Base Shipmates, It is with great sadness that I must advise you of the passing of Robert "Bob" Miller onto his Final Patrol. I received a call from Bob's wife Margaret "Peggy" about 7:30 AM this morning advising that Bob had died at 9:30 PM last night. Bob was born and raised in the Detroit area May 31, 1936, so had just turned 79 this past Sunday. Last week Bob had entered Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside, CA have his Bladder removed, which was cancerous, while in the hospital he contracted a bacteria (many patients do unfortunately) which the medical staff was unable to arrest with medications, so then on Tuesday (6-2-15) he was taken back into surgery to see if possibly there was an infection from his previous surgery, that proved to be negative. Following this exploratory surgery he died. Bob joined the Navy in May 1958, went to Sub School and then while in new construction he Joined the USS Thresher (SSN 593) and qualified in submarines on her in 1962. He was transferred off Thresher just prior to April 1963 to attend "B" School, April 1963 was the date that Thresher was lost with 129 men onboard while doing a deep dive test out of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, ME. Bob had obvious deep feelings for that Boat and Crew, as he had served with virtually all that were lost. Bob ended his active duty career retiring as ETCS (SS) in 1978 after having served on a few other Submarines, SSBN-599, SSBN-622 and SSBN-609, being a NUC it was only natural that he'd seek out a job in that field, and went to work for Bechtel Corp, where he wrote reactor test procedures and QC stuff, when he wrapped that up he started up a couple of his own business ventures. Peggy related Bob's request to have his ashes spread in the vicinity of Thresher, this is being checked into. Bob was a Plank owner of the Scamp Base, in fact he held the first Sr. Vice Commander spot when we received our Charter from USSVI, he went on to be the second Base Commander, and then was the Western Region District 6 Commander. He was very active in Sub Vets, and was always a cheerful guy and at the front of the volunteer line when someone was needed to help out. Please join with Evie and me in praying for Peggy and the family. Condolences can be sent to Peggy and the family at 1021 Glenmere Road, Vista, CA 92084-4715. Len Heiselt, Base Commander USS SCAMP BASE
