Best Friends DI's (black shoes) in training for a DI position, came up from Bainbridge and treated all of us 'airdales' as if we were the bottom of the Navy's slop pail. It was not a pleasant experience and I would like to forget it. For example, for missing a 'colunn left' command when marching to the Mess Hall, I was given 2 hours of guarding the coal pile at the base boiler plant.. Every 15 minutes had to march, with rifle, to the top of the 30-foot coal pile and check for ???? (I guess coal thieves), in dress whites with leg 'spats' and boon dockers.
My future brother-in-law, since deceased, was in the recruit training class with me.
