When I was in boot camp in March 1954, the cutoff date for Korean Veterans was January 1955. Out of boot camp I received the National Defense medal for Korean service. Although I was on 2 ships in 1954, the USS RANKIN (AKA-103) and transferred to the USS ROLETTE (AKA-99),which was on it's way through the Panama Canal to the Pacific Ocean, I was never in the combat zone in Korea. Massachusetts gave us a $300 Korea Bonus when I returned home in 1957 and there was a small monument in Holliston, Massachusetts with my name and the names of some of my friends on it. The last time I was there it had been changed to a "Korea-Vietnam" monument. The end of the Korean conflict was also changed back to 1953. I am a member of the KWVA (General Brad Smith Chapter.
