June 1982, completed my tour at FCTCL Dam Neck and proceeded to my next duty station, USS Saginaw (LST-1188) who was deployed to the Mediterranean. Caught a MAC flight to Rota, Spain. From there, caught a COD Flight (C-1A Trader) to a Trapped landing (arresting gear landing) onboard USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) Spent a couple hours onboard then was catapulted off to NSA Souda Bay, Crete, where I spent the next two days awaiting my next flight out. Having had two wonderful and relaxing days in Souda Bay, I was lifted off in a CH-46 (Sea Knight) helicopter to my next assignment, little did I know what was in store for me next. I figured we'd be landing on the flight deck, nope, it was fouled with, of all things, Marine vehicles! It was the hoist and wire rope trick for me!! Couldn't figure out why the guy on the flight deck had that long metal rod until I was told later on, it was a shorting probe! Seems that the spinning of the helicopter blades produces massive amounts of static electricity, and if not grounded properly, you could be in for the shock of your life when you touch down!!
