Hap remained at the Naval Academy after graduation teaching steam to Plebes. Flight training at Pensacola and Corpus Christi was followed by a tour with VF-93 aboard USS Philippine Sea for the last eight months of the Korean war. Aboard USS Hornet, his plane veered over the side and sank almost immediately during operations in the South China Sea.
