Was drafted in the Army in 1944, signed up for the Navy that day as a Shipfitter (now known as HTs) in the Sea Bees. Did some very short training and shipped to Saipan to help with Tinian operation.
My grandfather got rank fast as you can see. After the shelling of Tinian Island (7 days of it from the island of Saipan) he landed after the 3rd wave of Marines and they started drilling wells with D4 Cats while under fire. He did say much of the war except thru research found out he built the Naval Hospital that stand still today. His unit 92nd Const. Batt. was responsible for constructing the airstrips for the famous B-29 Nuclear attacks on Japan.
