While at sea on 17 August 1942, a fire broke out in the after battery room of the USS Bass (SS-164) and quickly spread to the aft torpedo room and starboard main electric motor, resulting in the death of 26 enlisted men by asphyxiation. Leonard Ode Blagg and 25 other enlisted men died from asphyxiation.
EM2 Blagg was originally buried at the Gorgas Hospital Morgue Cemetery (Row 6, Section C, Grave 16) in the Panama Canal Zone. His body was disinterred and returned to his family on March 18, 1948.
