The USS Indianapolis (CA-35) had been a top secret mission delivering parts of the atomic bomb to Tinian in preparation for the bombing of Hiroshima. She was being re-deployed to Okinawa when she was hit by two torpedoes, and sank in 12 minutes. Three days later (August 2nd) her survivors were spotted and by August 8th, 316 men had been rescued. She lost 893 officers and men. S1c McDowell was among the missing and later declared dead.
