Last Known Activity
After repairs at San Francisco, USS Curtiss (AV-4) sailed to Okinawa, arriving on 22 May 1945 to serve as flagship for Commander, Fleet Air Wing 1. On 21 June, a kamikaze and its bomb ripped two holes in her hull and detonated on the third deck, killing 35 and wounding 21 of her crew.
MaM2 Anderson sustained severe burns during the attack and was transeferred to the USS Gosper (APA-170) for medical treatment. He died later that day from his wounds. It is unknown where he was originally buried; however, his remains were returned to his family on 19 March 1949 and he is now buried in Cranberry, PA.
