KILLEBREW, Thomas E., Capt. U.S. Navy (Ret.) died February 21, 2007. Born in 1927 in Dayton, Ohio, Tom grew up in Riverdale and spent many hours with his father at the Dayton Canoe Club. He attended Van Cleve Elementary and was a 1946 graduate of Fairview High School. Tom was in the first Navy ROTC class to graduate from Ohio State University, receiving his regular Navy commission in 1950. His Navy career spanned 24 years and included duties aboard the USS Atka, USS Laffey DD724 in Korea, USS Preble DLG15, Navy Supply Depot, Yokosuka, Japan during the Vietnam War, Army Logistic MCT Center Fort Lee, VA. Captain Killebrew retired as Executive Officer Navy Aviation Supply Office, Philadelphia. While in the service he graduated from George Washington University with an MBA. Tom and Carol loved their life in the Military and are very proud of it. Upon retirement from the USN he became Procurement Manager of Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, then Procurement Manager of GTE Government Systems in Mt. View, California. In 1993 he and Carol returned to his beloved Dayton, Ohio and all the family and friends he loved. Tom loved people and he kept in touch with friends from all sectors of his life. In retirement he has served on the Board of the Ohio State NROTC, Alumni Society, joined the Dayton Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton, Antioch Shrine, the Greeters Unit, Antioch Seniors and rejoined the Dayton Canoe Club. He enjoyed belonging to the Dayton Historical Society. Tom loved card games and was a Bridge Life Master. Preceded in death by father George W. and mother Eloise Killebrew Carr and stepfather Robert P. Carr, brother Robert Carr, sister Betsy Carr Dixon and nephew Kevin Throckmorton. His wife of 56 years, Carol Sanger Killebrew and sons, Jeffrey Killebrew, Cindy and Chad, Michael Killebrew, Nicole and beloved grandson Alan and granddaughter Jessica survive Tom. Sisters, Marilyn Killebrew Picard and Tony, Pat Carr Hemmelgarn, Betty Pexton Carr; nieces Kim Throckmorton, Patty Liebrock, Sue Morgan, Julie Horan, Terry Jarrell and nephews Chris and Scott Hemmelgarn and Ted Carr also survive Thank you to all who were a part of Tom's life and supported us through this difficult time. Special thanks to the Staff of Heartland of Centerville and Hospice of Dayton who all learned the difficulties of living with the terrible disease of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Tom's family extends a warm welcome to attend a celebration of his life Saturday, March 3. They will receive friends beginning at 11:00 a.m. till the 12 noon Memorial Service at Schlientz & Moore Funeral Home 820 Miamisburg- Centerville Rd. A reception will follow at the funeral home. Hospice Chaplain Robin Barnes McCarthy will officiate. Final committal will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. In lieu of flowers gifts to the ALS Association or Hospice of Dayton will be appreciated (envelopes provided). Arrangements by Schlientz & Moore.
