WILLIAMSBURG — Vice Admiral Robert Edward Adamson Jr., USN Retired, died July 30, 2004, in Williamsburg, Va. "Rojo" was 83.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolyn "Lyn" Adamson; two daughters, Gail A. Gordon and her husband, Royal P. Gordon III, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Valerie A. Logwinuk and her husband, Greg Logwinuk, of Austin, Texas; daughter-in-law, Lynn Adamson of Coronado, Calif.; and seven grandchildren, LTjg R.P. Gordon IV, Katherine Gordon, Robert Gordon, Alexandra Adamson, Gregory Logwinuk, Marshall Logwinuk, and Christina Logwinuk.

He was preceded in rest by his son, CDR Robert E. Adamson III.

He was born in Chicago, IL in 1920, and attended Columbia University prior to entering the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. He graduated with the accelerated Class of 1944 on June 9, 1943.

During World War II, he served on board USS SAN DIEGO in combat operations against the Japanese. Following the war he was assigned to the USS MASSACHUSETTS. He then joined the Staff of Commander Battleship-Cruiser Force, Atlantic Fleet.

In 1947, he attended the USNA postgraduate course in Ordnance Engineering and then attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from which he received the degree of Master of Science in Physics. He had duty as Operations Officer and Physicist with Joint Task Force THREE at Los Alamos, New Mexico, Eniwetok and Nevada Proving Grounds. He also served as Physicist at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. He was a Staff Officer with the Military Liaison Committee to the Atomic Energy Commission, Officer of the Secretary of Defense, Washington, D.C. He later attended the Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and then was assigned to the Livermore Branch, Armed Forces Special Weapons Project, Livermore, Calif.

During the Korean War, he was the Operations Officer and Executive Officer on the USS BROWN and participated in operations in Korean waters during two deployments. He was Commanding Officer of the USS NAIFEH, USS WILTSIE, USS MULLANY, USS GALVESTON, Reserve Escort Division 12, Destroyer Division 152, and Task Force 86.

He served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans to Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Force, Pacific Fleet and then he was assigned Head of the General Purpose Objective Forces Section, Strategic Plans Division, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. In September 1967, he was promoted to Rear Admiral and became Deputy Commander Naval Ship Systems Command for Maintenance and Logistic Support, Washington, D.C. He commanded Naval Support Activity, NSA, Danang from December 1969 to July 1970 when he transered to Saigon to Command NSA operations until December 1970.
