Other Comments:
From Tom Burgdorf
Mark had received burns over 20 percent of his body from the USS Stark Attack May. 17 1987 and received the purple heart for his injuries. Mark had conveyed to me when we served together that he was on his way to his GQ station when he was burned by the impact of the 2nd Missile igniting the fuel from the first missile that struck the USS Stark

From the news  media at the time: Lawrence Mark Bareford, fire control technician third class, 23, of Fredericksburg, Va., with second-degree burns over 20 percent of his body.I

The newspapers reported Mark had 2nd degree burns, etc. However, that was incorrect. He received 3rd degree burns on 65% of his body.
