LT Thomas was assigned to VCS-6 aboard the USS San Francisco (CA-38). On November 13, 1942, the ship was under fire from the Japanese. The crew experoenced the death of 77 men and 105 others were wounded. LT Thomas was among the wounded and he died and was buried at sea on November 15, 1942.
