The USS Corvina (SS-226) went on her maiden war patrol, leaving Pearl Harbor 4 November 1943. After topping off her fuel at Johnston Island on the 6th, she was never heard from again. Japanese reports suggest that she may have been sunk by a Japanese submarine on 16 November. Her loss was officially announced 14 March 1944. Electrician's Mate First Class Schless was listed as Missing in Action and later declared dead 9 January 1946.
