Ensign Hanton was a pilot of a F4U-4B Corsair fighter bomber with Fighter Squadron 54 aboard the carrier USS Valley Forge (CV-45). On August 10, 1950, while on a reconnaissance mission near Chonui, Korea, his aircraft crashed and burned. His remains were recovered.
