HM2 JAMES FREDERICK ASKIN

Jim, as he was called, born September 10, 1942,. at Charlotte High School moved to Port Charlotte in 1958 and transferred from Hialeah High School to Charlotte High School. He was an active participant in basketball, baseball, track, cross country and football. He graduated in the Class of 1960.

He joined the Navy shortly after High School and became a Medic. When in Vietnam, he was assigned as Fox Company â??DOCâ?? with a Marine Unit. On July 20, 1966, he gave his life for his country. He died in the Arms of his friend and brother, Red, who was shortly thereafter shot 5 times but survived. â??DOCâ?? already had his orders to his next duty station and was a single digit short timer.

He received a Purple Heart, National Defense, Vietnam Service and Vietnam Campaign Medals.
