Richard Lee Bartley, Sr., M.D. (Ret.) was born January 11, 1923 at Lincoln, NE, to James Earl & Neva (McNiel) Bartley. The family lived in Lincoln until 1930 when they moved to Blair, NE. In 1935 they returned to Lincoln when Earl was asked to assume the Business Manager-Treasurer's position at Nebraska Wesleyan University.
Richard (better known as Dick) graduated from Jackson High School in 1941 and later from Nebraska Wesleyan in 1945.
WWII was in progress and Dick enlisted in the US Naval Reserve, and was called to active duty July 1, 1943, and was stationed at the US Naval Hospital, Norman, OK, as a Hospital Corpsman and Lab Tech. Later he was transferred to a medical Training Unit, Univ of Nebraska College of Medicine, Omaha. In November 1945 Dick was honorably discharged to the inactive duty reserve, US Navy, with the rank of LTJG. His medical training continued as he worked in the office of Dr L.S. McGoogan, MD, an Obstetrician-Gynecologist, in Omaha.
Dick and Virginia D. Rupert (Ginger) were married December 23, 1944 in Lincoln, NE. Ginger passed away in September 2010 after 64 years of marriage. Dick graduated from Medical School in 1947 and took his internship at Immanuel Lutheran Hospital, Omaha. In May 1948 the family moved to Sully, IA, a small town of 500 population, to begin his practice of medicine.
The Korean War broke out, and Dick volunteered again for active duty, US Navy, graduating from Flight Surgeon's School, Pensacola, FL, US Naval Air Station, in 1951. He was then ordered to duty in Japan and Korea until 1952 when he returned to the U.S. serving at the US Naval Air Station, Alameda, CA. He was honorably discharged in October 1952 with the rank of full Liutenant and Dick returned to practice in Sully, IA.

Richard Lee Bartley, M.D. (RET) passed peacefully from this life, at home, on Sunday morning October 20, 2013, after a number of months with cancer, under the gentle care of son Rick, daughter Kathy, and Mercy Hospice.

Dick and family returned to practice in Sully, IA. By early 1954 the practice load was very heavy. After much thought it was decided to seek a new practice and in June 1954, Dick and family moved to Audubon, IA, where a new hospital had recently opened, and two other Doctors there invited Dick to become a partner with them.
While living in Audubon, Dick was gratefully involved with the Boy Scouts of American program, having earned his own Eagle Scout Award in 1938. He was very proud of his service to Scouting in Audubon when many of the local youth attained the rank of Eagle. Camping was frequent and several canoe trips were also excellent training. Dick served as Advancement Chairman of the Southwest Iowa Council, BSA, and also in that same capacity in the Mid-America Council, BSA, during which time he produced a Scouting book concerning Courts of Honor for scouts advancing in rank as well as being awarded the Silver Beaver.
Dick also served on the Board of Education for the Audubon Schools, was County Medical Examiner many years, and also served on the First Methodist Church Board several terms while assisting with the construction of a new church building.
In 1973 Dick was offered a position with the Taylor Health Center, Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, MO, (later to become MSU). He served as Clinic Physician for one year beginning July 1, 1973. A year later, when the first Director of the Taylor Health Center retired (Dr. Bill Taylor), Dick was appointed Director and served in that position until he retired in 1988. The Taylor Health Center served students, faculty and staff of the University. Dick was named Director Emeritus in 1988.
He held membership in the Iowa Medical Society, Audubon County Medical Society, Greene County Medical Society and Missouri State Medical Society. While living in Iowa, Dick served as Editor of the Hawkeye GP News for two years.
Four children were born to Virginia and Dick's marriage, all of whom survive: Doug and wife Linda Bartley of Jefferson City MO; Richard (Rick) Bartley Jr. of Branson, MO; Kathy and husband Flavius Killebrew of Corpus Christi, TX; and Jim Bartley of Arvada, CO. Also surviving are five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, & Pumpkin the cat.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013, at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield, 1947 E. Seminole: (417) 886-9994. You may visit with the family starting at 3:45, and Rev. Bill Havens will conduct the memorial service at 4:30pm. Private burial will be at Maple Park Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a higher educational scholarship program of your choice, any humane society, or Macular Degeneration research.
