My father, Jack Douglas Curlee, died on September 10, 2015, in Cumming, GA. He was over ninety three years old and one of the Greatest Generation.

Enlisted on 12 MAY '43, entered on active duty on 1 JUL '43 and was commissioned on 29 JUN '44. Released from active duty on 23 JUN '46 and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Naval Reserve on 1 SEP '55.
Flag of Japan denotes landing on Okinawa (including Ie Shima), a prefecture of Japan. Made numerous trips to Hawai'i, which at the time, was a territory of the United States. Made many trips to the individual and various islands of the Marshall Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands which are too small to appear on the map. The flag of Indonesia denotes a landing on Biak Island, which is part of Papua, a province of Indonesia.
CURLEE, Jack Douglas, age 93, of Atlanta, GA, died peacefully on September 10, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born to George Douglas Curlee and Lottie Isabel Robinson Curlee in Birmingham, AL on March 22, 1922. Growing up in Birmingham, Jack graduated from Ensley High School. He later graduated from Auburn University where he played varsity baseball and briefly played minor league baseball with the Roanoke Red Sox, prior to his entry into military service. Jack proudly served his country as a naval officer aboard the USS LST-78 in the Pacific during World War II. Jack was retired from Rexnord Corporation where he had a lengthy career in sales management. While living in Homewood, AL, Jack served as a councilman for the City of Homewood and was active in the Optimist Club. He served as a Deacon and was Sunday School Superintendent of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church. While living in Jacksonville, FL, Jack served as a Deacon of Riverside Baptist Church. After moving to Atlanta, Jack became a longtime member of Dunwoody Baptist Church, the JOY Sunday School class, and his beloved men's group, the Romeos. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, George Brooks Curlee; his sister-in-law, Virginia Goodwin Curlee; and his nephew, Robert Brooks Curlee, all of Birmingham, AL. Jack is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Mollie Frances Holland Curlee; children, Rebecca Curlee Menetre (Larry) of Alpharetta, GA; Nancy Curlee Silverfield (Joel) of Tampa, FL, and Stephen Douglas Curlee (Patricia Viktor), of Franklin, TN. He is also survived by his adored grandchildren: Katherine Curlee Hamblen (Brian) of Nashville, TN; Daniel Holland Silverfield (Kathleen Shevlin) of London, UK; John Irwin Silverfield of Naples, FL; Matthew Douglas Curlee of Franklin, TN; Charles Delashaw Silverfield of Washington, D.C.; and nephew, William Whitten Curlee of Pelham, AL. A private family interment will be held at a later date in Birmingham, AL.
