Obituary for Paul J. Verderber
LINCOLN - Paul Joseph Verderber, 86, of Lincoln died at 12:50 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at his residence.
He was born May 30, 1923, at Deaconess Hospital in Lincoln, the son of John and Augusta M. Hassenstab Verderber. He married Betty Burns on Nov. 27, 1947, at St. Patrick's Church in Lincoln.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife; seven children, Bob Verderber of Middletown, John (Theresa) Verderber of Springfield, Theresa (Matt) Young of Lincoln, Nancy (Jim) Martin of St. Louis, Chuck (Lynda) Verderber of Vermont, Katie (Jeff) Stollhans of Michigan, and Barbara (Kent) Bowlby of Lincoln; grandchildren, Michael, Jacqueline and Laura Verderber, Alyse and Andrew Verderber, Michelle (Howie Fuiten) Derek, Erik, Kyle Young, Liesl, Louisa and Jens Ulrich-Verderber, Anna Stollhans, and Reuben and Edward Bowlby; stepgrandchildren, John and Tony Martin and Travis and Tera Bowlby; and a great-grandson, Carson Fuiten.
Paul retired from the tile and linoleum business. He was a self-employed contractor since 1955. He worked in many homes and businesses in Lincoln and Logan County.
He previously worked for Feldman and Company.
Paul was a member of Holy Family Church of Lincoln. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Pacific Theatre, U.S.S. Laurens, APA 153, radioman.
Paul enjoyed his hobbies of carpentry, photography, bowling, wood carving and bass fishing. He received the favorite artist award by vote at the first Lincoln Art Fair for his original bird and duck carvings. Paul supported his children and grandchildren in their many school activities. He attended and enjoyed their basketball, baseball, soccer, track, field and football games. Most of all, he was a loving husband and father.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with Rosary at 1:45 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at Holy Family Church of Lincoln, with the Rev. Jeffrey Laible officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Lincoln, with full military rites accorded.
Memorials may be made to Carroll Catholic School or Home Care of Central Illinois.
