Captain Gill was born in Junction City, Kansas and entered the Naval Academy in 1903. In 1911 he was appointed as aide to Staff Commander, First Division, Atlantic Fleet and beginning in 1916 served as gunnery officer on USS Seattle and Oklahoma. He was later executive officer of USS George Washington, and navigator on the battleship Pennsylvania. He commanded USS Antares, Vestel, and Astoria before becoming Professor of Naval Science and Tactics at Yale University. Captain Gill died on 9 January 1948.

Scope and Content Note
The collection is composed of 2 boxes of materials arranged in three series. Series I is the manuscript of History of the Cruiser and Transport Force, and includes related drafts, notes, and source materials.
Series II contains official Navy documents used by Gill in writing his History. The documents include submarine contact reports from convoy escorts (1918-1919); reports of collisions between ships in convoys (1918-1919); courts of inquiry, courts martial and other investigative reports which concerned the personnel of the Cruiser and Transport Force (1917-1918); charts and maps of convoy formations and routes; and other miscellaneous items such as weekly and annual reports of the Cruiser and Transport Force.
Series III is composed of Gill's personal correspondence and papers. Included are correspondence concerning his writings and naval career, miscellaneous memorabilia, newspaper clippings, and three folders of drafts of various articles and lectures.
