This was my first exposure to the "Politics of the Old Navy". The command didn't want us there but higher ups wanted to promote the fact that they were forward thinking so they sent down a reporter to interview us. First, Cinde & I were & still are, very proud of our WAVE title. That was the reporters idea of something to grab someone's attention. Second, if you notice the picture of me in the engine room, no snipe in their right mind would put a wrench on a fuel line from above. The XO, who thought having women on board was the worst idea he had ever heard of, staged that picture. "We can't see the wrench when you hold it that way." Ugh. I had been had. Change was coming to the Navy, they just weren't ready for it.
