Capt. Max Powell Bailey, Jr US Navy Retired, known by most as POPSY passed away Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at the age of 96. Popsy had resided in Birmingham at Galleria Woods for the past 3 years after moving from Milton, FL where he lived with his beloved wife after his retirement. Popsy was born in Rochester, Indiana. He attended The Marion Military Institute and Purdue University. He graduated from the University of Maryland and completed his master's degree in education, guidance & counseling at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. After a 32 year career in the Navy where he was an aviator and served in WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, he retired in 1970 and joined The Marion Military Institute as Dean of Students, Service Academy Preparation Department. He assumed duties as Commandant of Cadets and was later appointed interim president. Favorite passions and interests after his full retirement included spending time at his lake home in Cable, Wisconsin, working in his yard morning, noon, and night, completing Great Courses on tape to satisfy his intense thirst for knowledge, pampering his beloved wife, Norine, and spending time with his children & grandchildren. He loved surprising his grandchildren when they visited by making sure he had every flavor of PopTarts and Blue Bell ice cream, and every riding toy and pool toy made available for their pleasure. Chocolate ice cream, Hershey's milk chocolate & PayDay candy bars, and hot dogs were his MOST FAVORITE guilty pleasures. He lived his retired life by a motto commonly referred to as Popsy's Triple A Philosophy: ADMIT you have a problem, ACCEPT it for what it is, and ADUST to it! He had a manner about him that is rare in men today. He will always be remembered for his unwavering and selfless love and commitment to family and his high level of dedication to country and community. Popsy is preceded in death by his devoted wife, Norine Skidmore Bailey (MuMu). They had celebrated their 55th anniversary shortly before her death in 1996.
