Details Behind Award
Awarded for actions during the World War II The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Noah Adair, Jr. (NSN: 0-70177), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. BORIE (DD-215), in action against enemy Japanese forces near the shores of the Japanese Empire on 9 August 1945. When his vessel was struck by an enemy suicide plane which caused serious fires and extensive damage, Commander Adair skillfully maneuvered the BORIE while fighting and extinguishing the fires. Regaining his position in formation despite the damage to his ship, he aggressively directed his gun batteries in fighting off subsequent enemy suicide attacks on the task unit. By his cool handling of this emergency, Commander Adair maintained his ship as an effective unit on the radar picket station, and his courageous devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
