Details Behind Award
Awarded for actions during the World War II
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Torpedoman Edward J. Barton (NSN: 2068261), United States Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy in the line of his profession as leading Torpedoman on four successive submarine war patrols in the U.S.S. TRITON (SS-201) in 1942 and 1943. Through his courage and skill his Commanding Officer was able to inflict serious damage on the enemy. On one occasion his immediate action in opening the outer door of a tube in which a torpedo was making a hot run prevented serious damage to the tube and to the submarine. This action was indicative of the quick thinking and fearless action which he has displayed in all emergencies. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
