Details Behind Award
In a second letter Sanders stated that despite a thorough search by planes and ships, no trace of LTJG McKay had been located. He went on to suggest that he was certain McKay had been killed instantly in the blast.
On May 18, 1945, CDR Sanders recommended McKay for the Silver Star. The Board of Awards approved the medal on January 3, 1946. The citation reads, "As Sky Three Officer, he directed the fire of his automatic weapons and caused them to deliver a deadly barrage against the enemy. Although injured from the first suicide crash nearby, he remained at this station, rallying his men for the impending attacks. His heroic perseverance was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Naval service. He is now missing in action.
McKay's body was never recovered.
LTJG McKay epitomized the Supply Corps commitment to being a well-rounded naval officer first and foremost. He fought bravely alongside his line counterparts against a determined enemy. Not only did he "Deliver combat capability through logistics," he ensured ordnance was put on target and was singled out for his bravery in the Commanding Officer's After Action Report. In doing so he sacrificed his life and became the only supply officer to earn the Silver Star.
