For meritorious achievement in action against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of the Philippine Islands, September 12, 1944. Participating in a fighter-bomber strike against enemy shipping, pressed home his deadly attack to score a direct hit on a 3000-ton enemy freighter, causing the ship to explode and burn.
