  • The first Director of the Navy's Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service(WAVES/Women's Reserve)
  • The first woman to be commissioned as an officer in the US Navy.
  • The first woman to receive the Distinguished Service Medal
Civilian Career Highlights:
  • 1923 became Acting professor of economics and socialogy at Tusculum College.
  • 1926 became Dean of Women and professor of Sociology at Centre College.
  • 1932 became the Executive Secretary of the Associate Alumnae of Vasser College.
  • 1934 became the Dean of Women at Oberlin College.
  • 1936 became the President of Wellesley College.
  • 1945 after resigning from the US Navy she returned to her job as President of Wellesley College and remained their till retirement in 1948.
  • After retirement, she continue various church and civic work to include: UNESCO delegate, Director of the New York Life Insurance Company, The National Broadcasting Company(NBC), Radio Corporation of America(RCA), and the Ford Foundation's Fund for the Advancement of Education, and later co-chaired the National Women's Conference in Civil Rights.
  • Captain McAfee received more than 30 honorary degrees for her achievements.
