Last Known Activity

July 10, 1921 - November 26, 2014 William Stevens Patterson, formerly of Roanoke, Virginia, died at his home in Birmingham, Alabama, on November 26, 2014, after an extended illness. He was born in Roanoke, Virginia on July 10, 1921, to the late Nathalie Baker Patterson and Charles Bernard Patterson. He was married to the late Ora Elizabeth Leach Patterson on April 15, 1950. She and their eldest daughter, Elizabeth Lee Patterson, preceded him in death in 2007. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Bernard L. Patterson, M.D., and his sister, Jean Patterson Givens. He is survived by his daughter, Virginia Calvert Patterson of Birmingham, Alabama, his grandson, Thomas Anthony DelleDonne of North Berwick, Maine, and by his brother, Nathaniel Baker Patterson (Mickey) of Roanoke, Virginia, and their children, Ann C. Patterson of Washington, D.C. and Allen Baker Patterson of Roanoke, Virginia. Additional surviving family members include nephews Richard Givens (Barbara) of Charlotte, North Carolina, Charles Bernard Patterson, II of Hollywood, Florida, and Michael Low Patterson of Cary, North Carolina, nieces Mary Lynne Patterson Shepherd (Taylor) of Danbury, North Carolina, and Kathleen Givens Patterson (Jim) of Mathews, North Carolina, and numerous cousins residing throughout the southeastern United States. Mr. Patterson graduated from Jefferson High School in Roanoke, Virginia, attended Roanoke College and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Option, in 1943. While attending V.P.I., he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. During World War II, he served honorably as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy aboard the Independence Class aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Belleau Wood (CVL-24) in the Pacific Theater, and was aboard that ship in Tokyo Harbor to witness the Japanese surrender ceremony. Following his military service, he worked as a civil engineer for U.S. Steel Company and later Ingalls Iron Works, retiring from Trinity Industries in Birmingham, Alabama, in the late 1980's. Throughout his life he remained proud of his Naval service and the accomplishments of both of his daughters, and spoke fondly of his experiences as an Eagle Scout during his youth. At the time of his death he was a member of Shades Valley Evangelical Lutheran Church in Birmingham, Alabama. The family wishes to express their deep gratitude for the excellent care and support of Alacare Hospice, the V.A. medical staff and all of "Mr. P's" devoted caregivers, including Carolyn, Gigi, Flora, Patricia, Rovetta, Diann, Florence, Shikeria, Delores, Ivery, Betty, Dean, Andrea, Glennese, and Jackie; and for his long-standing devotion and support, Sam Loftin.
