Captain Walter Stanley DeLany, Jr. United States Navy (Retired)
Walter S. DeLany Jr., Captain U.S. Navy (Ret), 83, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006. Walt was a resident of Twin Lakes Community in Burlington. A memorial service was held Friday in Twin Lakes. Inurnment will be at the columbarium at the U.S. Naval Academy at a later date.
CAPT DeLany graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., in 1944, designated as Class of 1945. After graduation, he went to Fort Pierce, Fla., where he completed Scout and Raider (now SEAL) training, followed by duty in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he completed submarine training and spent the majority of his 28 years in the Navy with the submarine service including command of USS CAVALLA (SSK-244) and later USS CROAKER. (SSK-246) He spent three years in Hamburg, Germany, as liaison officer to the German navy. Following this, he commanded a large supply ship, USS ARCTURUS (AF-52), which delivered stores to the Atlantic fleet that were at sea.
CAPT DeLany's last duty in the Navy was as Assistant Academic Dean at the Naval Academy. He retired in 1969 to follow a second career in Community College Administration. He spent four years as president of a two year college in South Carolina, followed by nine years as president of Danville Community College in Virginia. He moved to Burlington in 1989. He was a member of the Naval Submarine League, the UDT-SEAL Association and Alamance Country Club. He had a B.S. degree from the U.S. Naval Academy, a master's degree from Stanford University, and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Texas in Austin. He was predeceased by his first wife, Anne Culp DeLany, who died in 1997. He is survived by his present wife, Mary Lynn Lewis DeLany of Greensboro, whom he married in 1999, and his daughter, Mary Anne DeLany, who lives in Maine.
