MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — John Matthew "Matt" Mathias, D.D.S., 39, of Martinsburg, died on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at the Georgetown Hospital in Washington, D.C. He was a dentist with Cruikshank & Mathias Dentists in Martinsburg, WV.

John was a 1987 graduate of Hampshire High School, served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy for eight years and was a 1996 graduate of West Virginia University Dental School where he received a degree in Doctor of Dental Surgery and was the president of his graduating class.
He was the secretary/treasurer of the Eastern Panhandle Dental Association, a member of the American Dental Association, Rotary Club of Martinsburg, WVU Alumni Association, Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Rio, Vicki Bell Hunt Club in Mathias and American Legion Post 134 in Kirby.
Dr. Mathias was married to Penny Hott on April 4, 1998, in Kirby.
Surviving with his wife and parents are one godson, Dylan T. Saville of Winchester; one sister, Nicole M. Pownell and her husband Billy of Romney; maternal grandmother, Madeline Bott Nesmith of Wardensville; and two nieces, Emily and Sarah Pownell.
Family received friends at the Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, from 6 to 9 p.m. and also at the Giffin Funeral Home in Capon Bridge on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Pallbearers were Michael Mathias, Jimmy Mathias, Lt. CDR. Johnny Rodgers, Will-iam Saville, Robbie Roach and Dr. Ed Cruikshank.
