Memories Located in northern I Corps, MCB 40 was at Camp Campbell, Phu Bai (just south of Camp Eagle (home of the 101st ABN)). The enemy up here took the war a little more seriously. NVA rather than VC (who we decimated during the 68 Tet Offensvive). Lots of rocket and mortar attacks. One attack destroyed our generator and necessitated a convoy to DaNang to bring back replacements. Another attack on our camp sent seventeen Seabees in our battalion to sick bay with various wounds, two of whom (SKCS Pelrine and BU3 Poteet) had to be medevac'ed to Japan.
Working in OPS, I spent a considerable amount of time flying in helicopters to various job sites and to 3NCB in DaNang so I got to see a lot of Vietnam. I'll never forget the hundreds of "moonscapes" caused by B52 Arc Light strikes. Thousands of craters, most filled with water. I wonder how much unexploded ordnance is still there, waiting for some farmer to hit it with a plow.
