Records report that TM1 Bonnett was a crewmember aboard USS Bugara (SS-331), a newly constructed submarine, commissioned in November 1944, that sailed from Pearl Harbor on February 21, 1945, for its first War Patrol bound for the Flores Sea near Java.  Navy records further report that the following day, February 22, 1945, Bonnett died from injuries and was buried at sea. According to the muster rolls dated the day of his death, TM1 Bonnett died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
