Last Known Activity:

James was appointed to the Boston Police Department, Traffic Division, as a Patrolman (Badge Number 3459) on October 14, 1953.  He was assigned to District 9 in Roxbury on January 15, 1954, where he stayed until he was promoted to Sergeant. 


In anticipation of his promotion to Sergeant, James was transferred to District 15, in his old neighborhood of Charlestown, on May 5, 1965.  He was promoted to Sergeant on May 21st of that same year.  On June 4, 1969, Sergeant Devlin was transferred again, this time to District 3 in Mattapan.  James was notified on December 23, 1969 of his appointment to the Boston Public Schools Attendance Department as an Attendance Officer effective January 1, 1970.  He resigned from the Police Department effective January 1, 1970 at 7:00 A.M. and worked as an attendance officer until his death.  


   
Other Comments:

James died on September 5, 1978 while doing his daily swim at the YMCA in Newton Corner, Massachusetts.  He was pronounced Dead-on-Arrival from cardiac arrest at the Newton-Wellesley Hospital at 6:35 PM.   James was buried September 8, 1978 on St Michael's Ave. at St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Roxbury, MA.
