Checked onboard in May while she was at NNSY. We had a great skipper, Captain Suggs. I remember he threw a pizza party for the ship after engineering passed their LOE. We were all down on the pier eating Pizza and Ice Cream as the Kearsarge was just leaving the yards. They looked envious!
Deployed to the Med in the Fall of 1995. Not too many port calls as we were underway a lot. Did the ditch. Spent Christmas in Trieste, Italy. Also hit Rhodes and Corfu. First carrier to pull in to Valetta, Malta, at least in recent history. Seemed like the whole country turned out to see us.
