Worst Moment DURING THIS MED TOUR WE CARRIED A FULL COMBAT LOAD OF AMMO, TRUCKS, JEEPS HOWITZERS PLUS THE TROOPS. THERE WAS SOMETHING GOING ON THAT WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE PREPARED FOR, BUT THAT INFO WAS NEVER DISIMINATED. THE WORST WAS INPORT WHEN WE WENT TO GQ BECAUSE OF A FIRE IN THE HATCH TRUNK TO NO. 2 CARGO HOLD THAT WAS FULLY LOADED WITH AMMO. CAUSE WAS A PAIL OF OILY RAGS, SPONTANOUS COMBUSTION. IF THE SHIP WOULD HAVE WENT UP MOST OF THE HARBOR WOULD HAVE WENT WITH IT. INCLUDING REALLY SCREWING UP MY LIBERTY PLANS FOR THE NIGHT.
Other Memories Oh yea, on the way home from this cruise we encounterd one of the famous North Atlantic storms. It managed to split the skin of the ship and we had sea water flowing into the port side mess deck. Anywho they shored that up until we got back to the states and could get it repaired.
Also during the storm another GM and my self had life lines secured to us and we made our way to the bow 40mm mounts and secured the 40mm ammo cans back into there gun tub brackets. In those days you always had live ammo inside the gun tubs some in cans and also more in the clip holders. Anyway the ammo in the cans had been floated out of there backets from the ocean coming over the bow. Even got a thank you from the skipper for a job well done. Plus very wet from the Alantic dumping on us :).
