On December 23, 1946, Admiral Reeves was ordered relieved of all active duty. He survived his wife, Mrs. Eleanor Watkins Reeves, who had been in invalid for some time before her death on November 28, 1947. He was survived by a son, Joseph M. Reeves, an artist, of Los Angeles, California, a brother, H.H. Reeves, of Schenectady, N.Y. and a niece, Mrs. Robert Wood, Patuxen River, Maryland, with whom he resided following his final retirement.

Citation: The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Distinguished Service Medal to Admiral Joseph Mason Reeves, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States as Navy Department Lend-Lease Liaison Officer from March 1941 to December 1945, Senior Military Member of the Munitions Assignments Board and Chairman of the Munitions Assignment Committee (Navy) from 13 February 1942 to 8 November 1945, and Chairman of the Joint Munitions Allocation Committee from 11 January 1944 to 2 September 1945. In diplomatic relations with the senior military representatives of the United Nations, Admiral Reeves displayed unusual qualities of leadership and rendered invaluable service in carrying out his duties. His skill and initiative in bringing about the harmonious distribution of finished materials to meet the demands of all United Nations Services were essential to the integration of the Allied military organization, and his brilliant analyses of the over-all situation were substantial factors in executing logistic plans in accordance with strategic requirements.

Operational and Building Data: Laid down by Union Iron Works, San Francisco, Calif., on November 19 1891. Launched October 26 1893; Commissioned July 15 1896, Decommissioned April 27 1906, Recommissioned August 29 1911, Decommissioned June 12 1919, Recommissioned August 21 1919, Decommissioned October 4 1919; Stricken November 22 1920. Demilitarized and Loaned as Museum to the State of Oregon, January 4 1924; Stricken November 2 1942. Sold for scrap, December 7 1942. Reacquired by Navy and stripped to main deck, September 1943. Reclassified IX-22 and used as ammunition Barge. Fate: Hulk sold for scrap, March 15 1956, and broken up in Kawasaki, Japan.
