What are you doing now:
It is Veteran's Day, Nov. 11, 2010, as I write this. Thank you, fellow shipmates, for your service! And all who serve now or in the past. I want to especially remember Walter "Larry" Maurer, US Army, who gave his life serving his country in Vietnam; he was a childhood playmate and classmate from 1st grade all the way to high school graduation and his name is forever engraved on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC, which I had the privilege of personally seeing.
six 25mm chain guns Aircraft 28 amphibious transport helicopters Power Plant two 600 psi boilers, two geared steam turbines, two shafts, 70,000 total shaft horsepower
Best Friends Scott Moore, Ron Knox, Al Minyard, Jim Pickett, Danny Young.
Best Moment Rescueing boat people. Going through the Panama Canal. Flew over the islands of Oahu, Molokai & Maui in a Marine CH-53, got some spactacular pictures.
Worst Moment Helo crashing on our flight deck.
Other Memories During commissioning ceremonies I was pulled out of the ceremony to fix the Medevac Elevator that the guest were using. Fly over of Soviet aircraft when we passed by Vietnam coast; some sailors mooned the planes!
