What are you doing now:
It is Veteran's Day, Nov. 11, 2010, as I write this. Thank you, fellow shipmates, for your service! And all who serve now or in the past. I want to especially remember Walter "Larry" Maurer, US Army, who gave his life serving his country in Vietnam; he was a childhood playmate and classmate from 1st grade all the way to high school graduation and his name is forever engraved on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC, which I had the privilege of personally seeing.
Best Friends Steve DeLooze, Tom Steppert. Mark Helock. Basically the whole Electric shop gang.
Best Moment Finally making 2nd class EM. Rescueing some boat people in the So. China Sea. Visits with Christian missionaries in Thailand and Japan.
Worst Moment Very heavy seas nearly turned the ship over one day in the Taiwan Straits. Nighttime collision with a Merchant ship out of Yokosuka, Japan.
Other Memories After being out of the Navy for 4 years, this ship was my first assignment back in. The ship spent just about all of Feb. '78 hauling army and marine troops and equipment between Okinawa, Korea, and Japan, it was booooooorrrrrrringggg!
