On April 1, 1952, Oceana was designated a naval air station. Soon after its runway expansion, Oceana added to its resources in another way. The Naval Auxiliary Air Station Fentress was designated a subordinate command of NAAS Oceana on March 22, 1951, and on October 24, 1951, Fentress was redesignated an auxiliary landing field to the future master jet base.
Nearly 1,100 acres of government-owned land located 3 miles east of what was then known as Fentress had been established for use in the operational training of carrier air group squadrons during the Second World War, beginning in 1940 and 1941, when its original 388.7 acres were developed. But as the configuration of the fleet's aircraft carriers changed, so did Fentress-and it was not done growing. The lands now comprising Naval Auxiliary Landing Field (NALF) Fentress.
