LCDR Chaffee died along side, LCOL Virgil "Gus" Grissom, and LCOL Ed White, at Cape Kennedy(now Canaveral), during a training exercise for Apollo 1, when the spacecraft was destroyed by fire.
LCDR Caffee is interred at the Arlington National Cemetery.
Graduated in the top 5th of his class at Central High School, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Served on the USS Wisconsin(BB-64) and USS Perry(DD-884) during his college years, for NROTC Training Cruises. Visiting England, Scotland, France, and Cuba aboard The Wisconsin, along with Denmark and Sweden aboard The Perry.
Recieved a key to the National Society of Engineers as a result of his solid academic performance.
Became one of the youngest Pilots to qualified to fly the RA-3B Skywarrior.
Selected by NASA in the 3rd group of Astronauts in 1962.
