Last Known Activity:

  • LCDR Chaffee died along side, LCOL Virgil "Gus" Grissom, and LCOL Ed White, at Cape Kennedy(now Canaveral), during a training exercise for Apollo 1, when the spacecraft was destroyed by fire.
  • LCDR Caffee is interred at the Arlington National Cemetery.

  • Graduated in the top 5th of his class at Central High School, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

  • Served on the USS Wisconsin(BB-64) and USS Perry(DD-884) during his college years, for NROTC Training Cruises. Visiting England, Scotland, France, and Cuba aboard The Wisconsin, along with Denmark and Sweden aboard The Perry.

  • Recieved a key to the National Society of Engineers as a result of his solid academic performance.

  • Became one of the youngest Pilots to qualified to fly the RA-3B Skywarrior.

  • Selected by NASA in the 3rd group of Astronauts in 1962.

  • The Chaffee Crater on the far side of the Moon.
